Quick reference
If Charlie is low
Hypoglycaemia
Charlie is low below 4 mmol/L

Use Charlie's agreed hypo treatment plan.

Charlie-specific treatment

1/2 glucose tablet if 3.9 or 3.8. 1 whole glucose tablet if 3.7 and below. 1/2 tube glucose gel if confused and unable to eat, applied inside cheeks/gums as specified in his care plan.

Then recheck

Re-check after 15 minutes. If still below 4 mmol/L, repeat the agreed treatment. If above 4 mmol/L, the hypo is resolved.

After a hypo

If about to be active, use the 10g carbohydrate snack in Charlie's diabetes kit. If the hypo happens at mealtime, once recovered give insulin and eat straight away.

Severe hypo

If unconscious, semi-conscious, fitting, or unable to take anything by mouth: recovery position, do not give anything by mouth, call 999, suspend insulin delivery on the pump, give GlucaGen if trained, never leave Charlie alone, and contact parents. On recovery, follow the hypo plan. The care plan states he should be taken to hospital by parents/caregivers after recovery.
